Install Libreoffice

1. You can find the download for the Libreoffice installation here: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/ We recommend you install the 'conservative' version, which is usually the second one on the webpage.  Again, select the appropriate operating system and use the 64-bit version (for example Windows x86_64), and download the installation files.  The installation of Libreoffice is straightforward if you select the Typical option, but you also may customize the install if you want.  If you are on Windows, it is recommended that you go through the custom installation process in order to mark the Quickstarter feature as 'not available'.  The following screencast demonstrates an installation on Windows:

2. Libreoffice will act as a client to the PostgreSQL database server.  Therefore, Libreoffice must be configured to be able to connect to PostgreSQL.  We do this by using Java and the JDBC driver.  The first step is to search for the LibreOffice application that was installed on your computer.  It is easiest at this point if you open the one that is called simply LibreOffice, rather than one of the related software programs like Base, Writer, or Calc.  You will now need the location of the pgJDBC driver file you installed previously.  In the following screencast, you will see how to configure Libreoffice to use this JDBC driver.  If there are any issues with your Java installation, you will not be able to proceed.  As in the screencast, after you click on the 'advanced' options, Libreoffice should find the Java Runtime Environment (jre) automatically.  Note also that of the three possible .jar driver files, the one without a jre number at the end is selected.  Make sure you completely close the program after you save these settings.  On Windows, you may also need to quit out of the Libreoffice Quickstarter taskbar icon.
