Jessie Jiafang Liang

Jessie Jiafang Liang is a PhD student under the supervision of Dr. Peter J. Cobb in the Faculty of Education at the University of Hong Kong in the Information Science division. For her PhD study, Liang applies data science and scientific investigations to study ceramics unearthed from the Vedi Fortress Archaeological Site, Armenia. Liang is also an object conservator and serves as the conservation manager for the Ararat Plain Southeast Archaeological Project. She graduated from the UCLA/Getty Conservation program in 2010. Liang then worked in the conservation department of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (NAMA) as a Kress Foundation Conservation Fellow to conduct a condition survey on the Islamic ceramics collection. Liang participated in field archaeology conservation at the Shaanxi Academy of Archaeology in China from 2011-2017, where she worked closely with archaeologists to conduct conservation and use portable scientific equipment such as pXRF, microscopes, etc, in order to record materials’ information in-situ. Prior to become a PhD student, Liang worked at the Architectural Conservation Laboratory in the Faculty of Architecture at HKU as a project-based associate researcher to conduct documentation and identification of fibrous tempers found in the plaster on historic buildings in Hong Kong. She has also helped with a condition survey of artefacts from private collections and new ceramic acquisitions in the University Museum and Art Gallery at HKU.

Liang is very interested in applying non-invasive scientific techniques to extract information from archaeological materials and using data science to help scholars to understand the information and answer their research questions.

Liang is an accredited Associate Research Fellow by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security in Shaanxi Province and the founder of Green Water A&A Conservation Consultancy based in Hong Kong. She possesses the Irradiating Apparatus Licence which allows her to conduct related research in Hong Kong and worldwide.

  • Master of Art, University of California, Los Angeles
