2018 Fieldwork in Armenia

Open Archaeology

In the summer of 2018, the Open Archaeology team joined the Vayots Dzor Fortress Landscapes Project (VDFLP) of the University of Central Florida to conduct archaeological surface survey in the Yeghegis River valley of Armenia.  VDFLP is directed by Dr. Tiffany Earley-Spadoni, in collaboration with Arthur Petrosyan and Boris Gasparyan of the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography at the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.  Open Archaeology's work was supported by the Penn Museum of the University of Pennsylvania, the Center for the Analysis of Archaeological Materials (CAAM) at the Penn Museum, the Penn Libraries, and Price Lab for Digital Humanities.

The goals of Open Archaeology's initial season were threefold: to gain experience conducting archaeological work in Armenia, to learn about the landscapes and ceramics of Armenia, and to field-test new digital recording methods for surface survey.

Meet the Armenia 2018 team.
